Schaumann bodies are ovoid concentric calcifications reportedly found in 70% to 88% of sarcoidosis cases, whereas asteroid bodies are stellate inclusions within cytoplasmic halos that are found in up to 9% of cases. Schaumann bodies are inclusion bodies, first described by Schaumann in 1941, typically seen in granulomatous diseases such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and chronic beryllium diseases.
The characteristic inclusions in giant cells (for example, Schaumann bodies and asteroid bodies) are not seen in all cases and are not pathognomonic. The granulomas of sarcoidosis may heal without a trace, but confluent granulomas can result in extensive, irregular scarring. Schaumnann bodies, sometimes called conchoidal bodies, are large concentric calcifications that form within the cytoplasm of giant cells in sarcoidosis and other granulomatous disorders and often contain refractile calcium oxalate crystals.
